Yes, there was Sheet Cake!Members, friends and family gathered together to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of CA25 United for Progress (25UP) on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Vincenzo's Newhall. The group that started a year ago, shortly after the cataclysmic election of Trump has grown from a handful of people protesting on a street corner to a formidable community of over 1,000 with a core group of over 150+ paid members. After some quick organization business, the celebration began with a historical reel that documented the origination of 25UP. After that Special Guest, California State Senator Henry Stern, addressed the group encouraging it to remain active and firing the membership up for 2018. Several activists sent congratulatory greetings via video to the group including: Sandra Fluke - Social Justice Attorney; Congressional Candidates Jess Phoenix, Katie Hill and Bryan Caforio; Case Against 8 Supreme Court Plaintiffs Jeff Zarrillo and Paul Katami; and Representative Karen Bass (CA-37). The group of over 100 people gathered for a team photo and enjoyed a great cake. Members enjoyed a couple of trivia challenges including: "Anyone But Trump" - Members tried to name past presidents who share characteristics with Trump; and "Did Trump Tweet It" - A contest with 20 outrageous tweets where members tried to discern which were Trump's. The Summer Socials theme is “Getting to Know You.” 25UP is producing the events to offer progressives from across the 25th District a chance to get to know one another better, in order to strengthen the alliances that will be needed to flip the 25th Blue in 2018. The funds raised at this event and other Summer Socials will benefit 25UP and will be allocated toward its plans to launch a speakers series in the Fall. The theme for this Summer Social was "Building Friendships, not Walls." CA 25th Congressional Candidate Katie Hill joined us to tell us about her vision for the CA 25th and had the opportunity to answer some thoughtful questions from our guests in an in-depth manner. The third of the Summer Socials events is with Candidate Bryan Caforio on Sept. 9.
